چکیده

Consider a wireless network of n nodes represented by a graph G = (V,E) where anedge (i, j) ∈ E models the fact that transmissions of i and j interfere with each other, i.e.simultaneous transmissions of i and j become unsuccessful. Hence it is required that ateach time instance a set of non-interfering nodes (corresponding to an independent set in G)access the wireless medium. To utilize wireless resources efficiently, it is required to arbitratethe access of medium among interfering nodes properly. Moreover, to be of practical use, such a mechanism is required to be totally distributed as well as simple. As the main result of this paper, we provide such a medium access algorithm. It israndomized, totally distributed and simple: each node attempts to access medium at eachtime with probability that is a function of its local information. We establish efficiency of thealgorithm by showing that the corresponding network Markov chain is positive recurrent aslong as the demand imposed on the network can be supported by the wireless network (usingany algorithm). In that sense, the proposed algorithm is optimal in terms of utilizing wirelessresources. The algorithm is oblivious to the network graph structure, in contrast with the so-called polynomial back-off algorithm by Hastad-Leighton-Rogoff (STOC ’87, SICOMP ’96)that is established to be optimal for the complete graph and bipartite graphs (by Goldberg-MacKenzie (SODA ’96, JCSS ’99)). Joint Rate Adaptation and Medium Access in Wireless LANs: a Non-cooperative Game Theoretic Perspective

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on IEEE 802.11 standards are becoming ubiquitous today and typically support multiple data rates. In such multi-rate WLANs, distributed medium access and rate adaptation are two key elements to achieve efficient radio resource utilization, especially in noncooperative environments. In this paper, we present an analytical study on the non-cooperative mu...

Efficient Distributed Medium Access Algorithm

Allocation or scheduling of resources among various entities contending for their access is one of the fundamental problem in engineering and operations research. To design a large, scalable networked systems, scheduling algorithms are required to be computationally very simple and distributed (or message passing). In this thesis, we present a novel method to design performance optimal, simple ...

BeamMAC: A New Paradigm for Medium Access in Wireless Networks

Medium access using the distributed coordination function of IEEE 802.11 is not efficient in wireless multihop networks if the devices are equipped with beamforming antennas. This paper proposes a distributed MAC protocol that goes completely away from the spatial reservation scheme of 802.11. It facilitates the use of beamforming antennas by following an announcement-objection scheme: a potent...

Medium Access Control Mechanisms in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Medium access control protocol plays an important role in providing fair and efficient allocation of limited bandwidth in wireless LANs. The basic medium access model in the IEEE 802.11 standard, known as DCF (Distributed Coordination Function), is widely used in wireless LANs. Research efforts in wireless multihop networks, where wireless nodes need to forward packets on other’s behalf, try to...

Distributed medium access control for wireless mesh networks

Wireless mesh networking is an emerging technology for future broadband wireless access. The ad hoc manner of wireless mesh networks (WMNs) determines that distributed medium access control (MAC) protocols are desired. Multimedia traffic with heterogeneous quality of service (QoS) requirements is expected to be supported in small-, medium-, and large-scale WMNs. Wireless mesh routers in WMNs ar...

description Design, analysis and implementation of wireless protocols and algorithms. One of the main challenge in wireless ad hoc networks is Medium Access Control. The IEEE 802.11 standard provides a communication mode called DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) that is fully distributed and suitable for ad hoc networks. However, the MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol described in 802.11...
